The addition to a private collection contemporary art museum, seeks not to outshine its historical predecessor. The existing classical brick building in upstate New York was originally a Masonic Temple.Formally the same proportion as the original museum, the addition doubles the gallery space, and is rendered as a shadow or twin of its host. A textured skin mimics local vernacular materials and allows the addition a sense of modesty and neutrality in comparison to the pilasters and classical adornments of the brick building. A sunken forecourt further supports the neutrality of the skin by allowing it to be uninterrupted by the entry.
