This home was asked to provide privacy within the context of a semi-urban established neighborhood. In addition it was to allow for plenty of daylight to wash into the home for the making of a happy place. To round it off, it was to be energy efficient.
What to do? On the one hand it needed to be open, on the other closed off. In addition to this perplexing situation, the best light, the Southern light, was coming right from the direction of the street.
To solve the problem poetically, we decided on a series of exterior spaces surrounding large expanses of glass. For privacy those terraces and courtyards were closed off to prying eyes by freestanding brick walls. For the issue of solar gain we employed a variety of awnings, aesthetically integrated into the adjoining roofs of the home.
As a result the interior spaces are flowing seamlessly to the outside, including a landscape oasis in the rear, blurring the sense of demarcation and increasing the home’s spaciousness.
Half the square feet for twice the space - lots of glass, lots of sunlight, lots of privacy, and stellar energy efficiency.
