Geyer began working with Cochlear, one of the leading innovative businesses in Australia, 4 years ago to undertake a strategic brief and property strategy to identify how their future accommodation could support their competitive advantage in the market. Geyer engaged the Cochlear Executive and Business Units, and identified a number of key objectives and principles for Cochlear’s future accommodation requirements including:
_Communication of their role as one of the world’s leading edge manufacturers of cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing technology and an increasing international presence.
_The ability for the physical environment to be used as a marketing tool, allowing visiting surgeons to experience Cochlear’s manufacturing, R&D, warehousing and distribution system, as well as learn about specific product features.
_The need for a tiered accommodation strategy that would allow flexible expansion alongside company growth and manufacturing demand – including the incorporation of new lean manufacturing techniques.
_Attraction and retention of global best talent from diverse cultural backgrounds.
_The ability for the new headquarters to support Cochlear’s robust manufacturing, R&D and marketing requirements.
_Selection of an appropriate location to maximise proximity to other organisations who together with Cochlear can create a centre for hearing excellence in the Southern hemisphere.
Based on these objectives, the strategic brief identified the benefits to Cochlear of anchor tenant status, and more
specifically the advantages of locating their headquarters on the Macquarie University campus to form part of the world's first hearing precinct; a place where business, academia, the medical fraternity as well as research and
development would come together in a truly collaborative partnership.
A new development, located on University Avenue was selected as the preferred site, and provided the option for future expansion on adjacent land planned in a series of three tranches over the next 15
years.
The early identification of the site allowed Geyer to work in collaboration with the Architect Toland Architectural Design Partners to modify the building design incorporating Cochlear’s specific functional requirements as well as to create a building that communicated the Cochlear brand and desired culture.
