The Anatomy of Luxury and Desire: Collector’s shophouse
In crafting the retail space for Club21 at One Bangkok, we sought to embody the brand's ethos of “The Anatomy of Luxury and Desire.” At its core, the term “Anatomy” serves as a lens through which we can explore not just the bodily structures of living organisms, but also the intricate internal framework that makes up a complex identity, allowing us to blend diverse elements into a harmonious whole.
Our challenge in this project was requested by our client, Khun Pavanaree Tohsaeng (Brand director of Club21 Thailand), to integrate traditional wood work and details into the retail experience. Our design draws inspiration from the bustling marketplace that once occupied this site, infusing the space with a sense of history, textures and character. By reinterpreting the traditional shophouse concept, we create a unique narrative that reflects both the past and the present. This “Collector” personality serves as a binding force, uniting various design elements into a cohesive story that teases and evokes different emotions from visitors.
The transformation of an ordinary setting into a retail-ready environment involved a thoughtful examination of space and its potential. We embraced the themes of “construction” and “occupation,” utilizing the multi-level layout to introduce and inject different phases of construction developments throughout the store. Each stage, from raw and unfinished to polished and complete, represents distinct “anatomical” zones within the retail experience. This dynamic approach invites visitors to journey through a physical and visual landscape that continually evolves.
Larger architectural elements act as anchors, each varying in scale, material, and texture. As customers traverse the space, they encounter a series of warm, detailed woodworks and antique pieces that contribute a sense of intimacy and character. These elements embody the “Collector” spirit, providing visual and tactile focal points that enhance the overall experience. The juxtaposition of organic shapes and traditional forms creates an inviting atmosphere, even in an unexpectedly modern context.
Ultimately, it is this seemingly unrelated yet cohesive ensemble of design elements that encapsulates the uniqueness of Club21's diverse styles and personalities. The shophouse stands not only as a retail space but as a celebration of luxury and desire—an exploration of what it means to collect, curate, and experience beauty in everyday life. Through this concept, we invite visitors to engage with the store on a deeper level, fostering a connection that transcends the mere act of shopping.
