A nation of paranoid people, pushed to the edge by a culture of fear, perceive the world to be in a state of immanent doom. They need to be able to escape the city at any given moment to avoid perishing in a terrorist attack, nuclear war, or any of the other number of impending disasters that are bound to occur without warning. They are ready to flee from the cities but don't want to have to leave all their belongings behind. Based on the pragmatism of a mobile home, this “Clothing_Vehicle_House” was designed to be aerodynamic on the road, as well as able to grow, expand and adapt as the world shifts from pre to post apocalypse.I have designed a system of vehicles that are individualized for the inhabitant based on the form of his or her body. The shape of the vehicle is initiated from a study of the individuals figure and then scaled up to reach the size of a large car. At the smallest scale, the structure conforms snugly to the human body and acts as a protective clothing similar to body armor. This layer can be detached from the system to function solely as clothing. Between the structural metal bands lies a tensile interior ribbing system that allows the vehicle to expand to the scale of a house. This ribbing is thin and perforated to allow light to enter the interior spaces. It's flexible materiality allows the home to contort, twist and turn to adjust to obstacles or conditions in the landscape. As time passes, and people move beyond fear, emergent communities will develop along the sides of the highway and new cities will begin to flourish. There is a certain level of compatibility among these units that allow them to connect and assemble into larger social networks. Now the inhabitants can pool together resources and rebuild their world the the post-apocalyptic desert environment in which they have managed to survive.
