Located in a poplar forest near Bancroft, Ontario, this owner-built project is designed to enable simple construction techniques using off-the-shelf materials that can be easily transported to the remote site. A key element was the use of Durisol insulated concrete forms, a versatile product that is both structure and insulation, made of 100% recycled cement-bonded wood fibre with a rigid mineral wool insulation insert. With a ground-mounted photovoltaic array with battery bank and a backup propane generator, this one-storey house runs fully off-grid.
