As befitting Australia’s oldest
continuously operating cinema, (since 1911), the new foyer refurbishment was
focused on unearthing and enhancing any of its remaining original features.
Like most cinemas, the Classic has lived
through many alterations and additions, but luckily a good portion of the old
foyer has survived. Old mosaic tiles were discovered under carpet and concrete,
and ornate plaster details were revived and highlighted in white, after being
disguised in the previous drab monotone scheme.
The desire was to move away from the
typical bland, modern carpeted cinema foyer to something more like an grand
hotel foyer or club by introducing texture, low mood lighting and rich blues
and brass highlights.
The classic now embraces its full 101 years
of existence.
