A former taxi garage in the West Chelsea area of Manhattan, this space was double height, beginning 13’-0” below street level to 18’-0” above. A new concrete slab was poured to create a 5,000 sq. ft. bi-level gallery space design for maximum flexibility. The simple design allows for the art to take center stage, with controlled lighting in simple volumes while providing moments of architectural drama such as the sky lit poured-in-place concrete stairway connecting the main viewing areas. The light acts as a guide to the visitor’s path as they view the work in the gallery, leading them to explore the lower gallery and circle back around to the street level exhibition space.
