Humphries Poli Architects was selected as one of three finalists to participate in a design competition for the development of a 600,000 sq. ft. office building to centrally house various agencies for the City and County of Denver (Now the Wellington Web Municipal Building).
The inherent challenges posed by the site were compounded by the importance of establishing the building’s relationship to a wide range of surrounding architecture and civic areas.
For the Civic Center Office Building, our proposed design of a 15-story building included a sensitive integration of the historic international style Annex I office building on the northwestern edge of Civic Center Park. Our conceptual design sought to create a significant and enduring addition to the Civic Center District and downtown Denver. Through a careful amalgam of building design, site design, interior design and urban design, the structure was envisioned to help redefine the critical components of Class A commercial office space.
Specifically designed to simultaneously mirror the axis in front of the Voorhies Memorial and the site’s abutment with the shift in the urban grid as it transitions into downtown, the resulting concept was a confluence of two overlapping orders that could be experienced throughout the building.
