In the former Winter Port area of Vilnius City, we presented our architectural vision, which would naturally combine the quality of city life, connection with nature, and historical context.
Our proposed idea, Villa Riva, is a closed neighborhood of seven city villas with 100 apartments, underground parking, and numerous high-quality public and private outdoor spaces.
Our design is based on the historical composition of the Winter Port, which has become a strong architectural axis, structuring the entire area and connecting it to its context. The main architectural volumes are formed around this axis.
The structure of the neighborhood’s greenery, paths, and recreational areas is inspired by the shape of a boat, creating a symbolic connection with the port, water, and movement in nature.
The greatest attention is paid to people and the community. Safe, cozy courtyards with children’s playgrounds, community gardens, and themed recreational areas are planned within the neighborhood. This is a place where residents can relax, socialize, and build lasting relationships.
Each of the seven three-story apartment buildings is designed with comfort and quality of life in mind:
- The first-floor apartments will have private terraces facing the inner courtyard or greenery.
- Residents on the second and third floors will be able to enjoy balconies, and some apartments will also have spacious terraces.
- The mezzanine floors will also feature outdoor terraces offering sweeping views of the river and the cityscape.
The buildings form a semi-enclosed inner courtyard – the facades are oriented towards the central axis and protected from the outside environment by a structure created by volumetric solutions. This creates an aesthetic environment, protected from noise and wind, suitable for both everyday life and community activities.
Special attention has been paid to natural light. The upper floors are integrated into the volume of the building, ensuring adequate sunlight in the courtyard and surrounding spaces throughout the year, especially in winter. This solution also lightens the silhouette of the buildings, helping them to blend smoothly into the surrounding environment and maintain visual balance with natural accents – the slope to the west and the Neris River to the east.
Villa Riva is a neighborhood that not only meets the needs of modern city dwellers, but also respectfully integrates the history and natural values of the area into a contemporary architectural language.
