Nestled in the Fashion District of Downtown Los Angeles, City Market Social House comprises two warehouses of the original City Market of Los Angeles compound, designed by the once prominent LA architects Morgan & Walls and opened in 1909.
Studio Antares design breeds a new life to the structures which had been originally well-built and standing well preserved, but whose programs and functions had not stood the test of time. The renovated buildings become home for City Market Social House sprawling over 20,000 sq. ft., with a program serving as a multipurpose event space for social events, including major industry gatherings, award shows, opening and closing receptions, product launches, conferences, fashion shows, filming and large private celebrations.
The preserved and exposed original bow trusses, concrete frames and brick walls dominate the contiguous space that includes a large assembly hall, smaller gathering hall, full restaurant-size kitchen, bar, lounge, greenroom, studios and on outdoor patio.
The interior palette is made of contrasting natural materials; brick, wood, and weathered corrugated panels all play with one another against fresh white walls. The warm wood trusses and polished concrete floors are seemingly enhanced by the light filtered through the expanse of large roll-up glazed doors which run along the two sides of the main space. Glazed garage doors on the East side line the former loading dock area and open into the outdoor patio. The main entrance is on the West side from the former the alley which becomes as a central spine and pedestrian promenade for the entire redeveloped block, engaging the City Market Social House spaces with a new found sense of area's conviviality.
