Renovation of a dim 3,5 bedroom mezzanine level apartment located in a 60s apartment building within a close proximity to a city lake in a broader center of Bratislava.
Nowadays a rather customary cleaning up of the crammed-up layout into structural elements allowed to redefine the proportion, flow and space arrangement into functional zones according to the intensity of their use. The construction adjustments fully open up the layout along two main axes, strengthen the continuity of the space and illuminate the interior. The rough structural base contrasts with precise joinery. Instead of entering through a dark narrow corridor you immediately see through the entire apartment in two directions - along the revealed concrete beam to the opposite end of the apartment while catching the daylight from the master bedroom, both when the door is open and, thanks to the skylight, when it is closed. Interconnection of the living room together with the kitchen and dining room unfolded the day living area allowing the young family for a quality time spent together indoors.
The opened up vistas across the entire floor plan allow to use the full potential of the double exposure layout with windows at the level of the adjacent greenery.
We often collaborate with artists in our work, so we turned to painter Zofia Dubova to enrich the interior with art that is an integral part of the project. A glass transom created by her illuminates the area even in case of a closed bedroom door.
We chose to partially light the bathroom with daylight coming from the kitchen window by using matte glass bricks which transmit the light without compromising the intimacy.
A pale natural color palette brightened up by an earthy terracotta complements the loose atmosphere of the household along with the sunsets above the lively lake.
