Prize winner of the competition "Stadt bauen. Stadt leben." The older part of Saarbrücken lost its urban open space relationship to the river due to the construction of the city highway. The entire area along the river banks in the heart of Saarbrücken has become a noisy, inhospitable open space. By extending the city highway into the tunnel, the “Alt-Saarbrücken” and “Stadtschollen” neighbourhoods can reach back to the boulevard and the Saar. The river can once again be tangible in the city. The goal is regaining the municipal spaces, with a new city view towards the water. The new centre on the river is intended to be a vital city at any time of the year, whether it is flooded or not. Everything has to be possible and perceivable: strolling, playing, sports, partying, music and theatre, training and continuing education, relaxation, technology and nature. The paradigm of the car-friendly city will be replaced, requiring a change of the structure of the city and its infrastructure. In collaboration with
