Located within the Greater 14th Historic District, this unique adaptive-use project incorporates a historic former coal distribution facility designed by John A. Lankford, Washington’s first registered African-American architect. Abandoned since the 1968 Martin Luther King riots devastated this area of the city, this 27-unit residential project restores the historic building and includes the construction of a new 7-story residential addition around the extant building. Architecturally, the restored historic building, and its contemporary additions, is articulated as a series of compatible yet distinct elements appearing built over time.
