This new 19-Story, 100,000 SF hotel is located at 189 Bowery, in the lower east side of Manhattan. Originally designed as a conventional poured-in-place concrete building, our innovative client, citizenM, decided to have us redesign the building using modular construction. citizenM Bowery is the tallest modular hotel in the world, on the oldest thoroughfare in Manhattan.
Because of the change in structural system, the double height mechanical room, originally located on the 18th floor, was moved to the 3rd floor, and a three-foot-thick concrete ‘mat-in-the-sky’ was poured on the fourth floor, on which the modules are stacked. The hotel consists of 210 guestroom modules, the majority of which are doubles (guestroom-corridor-guestroom) for a total of 300 rooms. The hotel also includes a double height lobby and lounge and a rooftop bar with outdoor space and spectacular views.
As executive architects, SBJGroup also coordinated the interior design received from the Amsterdam based firm, concrete.
