Circle Shade is an elegant award winning portable canopy system designed as a Kit of Parts with 3D printed joint nodes for quick assembly, and flexible use integrating outdoor furniture. It was finalist for Architizer A+Awards 2019, Outdoor Furniture category. The project was the winner of Folly/Function 2017 design/build competition in New York. The program called for four demountable structures to populate a highly active park, for adaptable use, and assembly in 10-15 minutes by 1-2 people.
Circle Shade design vocabulary is refined, based on the structural tripod concept. Harmonizing system with detail, the distilled DNA is composed of two fundamental geometries: circle and triangle. A single unit consists of 3 main components, and only 7 parts: 1 canopy, 3 poles and 3 cylindrical counterweights. A unit assembles in 5 minutes by 1- 2 people. To set up, the canopy is circular for ease of rolling, and can provide for branding. All joint nodes and connectors are fabricated in high strength structural 3D printed nylon-carbon fiber composite. Structural engineering with technical considerations and high level of concern for detail was applied meticulously throughout the process. In fabrication 3D-modeling and printing enabled joining bespoke with customized high-tech at low cost.
Circle Shade synthesizes renewal of current shade structures and portable tent concepts. It eliminates the center pole of traditional parasols, and the opening and closing maintenance of an umbrella. The canopy system offers an alternative to square tents, and integrates counterweights as outdoor furniture. It's designed with flat pack delivery in mind. The versatility responds to current world wide health and climate change challenges. Circle Shade can set up in arrangements for social distancing, and provides shade and sun protection against the sun’s harmful rays. The unique canopy system offers a new type of space for improved outdoor living quality. It’s flexible, portable and integrates with ease. The structure sets up for use as single unit or in clusters for gatherings and social events. It can function in a range of settings such as parks, gardens, educational campuses and urban environments including pool side and water front.
The innovative and mobile canopy system serves both the public and private realm for people to connect, engage and inhabit, while offering individual respite and joy.
