Art is experienced best in a suitable area. Films are enjoyed best in a
cinema, paintings admired most in a museum. Sometimes the area is there, more often it's created specifically. Special buildings deserve a
podium. The Pushkin Cinema is restored to its abstract iconic state, with
imprinted, authentic detailing in a layer of light-grey, matte stucco
finished in weatherproof paintsystem. The building’s original podium is
enlarged to a more contemporary space, giving this special building back
it’s deserved space in the city. This podium creates an uninterrupted viewing area of the building. To
enhance this, the podium is surrounded by a very transparent veil. It
consists of high-strength, durable and weatherproof Kevlar-fibre strings
which are set spaced evenly on rotating discs at the top and bottom. When seen from the right angle (for instance when approaching by car) the
strings act as a screen. On these 'screens' it will be possible to
subtly beam images of films or oncoming events. Perpendicular views to
the building show a transparent wrapping, becoming clearer as one
approaches the building, becoming totally clear when passing through the
'veil' and entering the podium. The veil is held up by an elegant structure suspended on columns. This
Corian clad 'aureole' supplies visitors with a unique view and is
accessible from street and podium level by stairs and an elevator.
Besides this, the structure acts as backbone for all the necessary
equipment illuminating the cinema's fresh face. The Pushkin cinema will recapture it's earned spot in the city again and
make people curious what's to see behind it's new face!
