Cinematic Undulations: Changing the Face ̶ Pushinsky Cinema
Contemporary architecture practice and its evolving fabrication techniques are delivering extraordinary architectural solutions that revitalize urban environments through astonishing experiences. Our Pushinsky Cinema renovation restores the magnificence of this urban edifice, an iconic architectural landmark that is situated within Pushkin Square, one of Moscow’s most significant urban contexts. Our proposal is an elegant and sophisticated addition with a new, contemporary spirit that resonates with the way in which Pushinski Cinema was perceived when it was completed in 1961. We have employed the advanced computational tools of CATIA-based software to generate an exotic, sinuous new façade. Situated at the end of a long, dramatic stair and balcony sequence on axis with the Square’s central spine, this spectacular new skin will once again invigorate the atmosphere of the Pushkin Square’s public sphere.
Advanced robotic CNC-fabrication processes will shape the material science of DuPont’s super-white and ultra-smooth Corian® cladding material into a sturdy, sculpted base that frames the entryways to the newly-renovated lobby of Pushinsky Hall.** Exaggerated, patterned seams will be etched into the material prior to molding. To construct the glazed expanse of the full height façade, we have chosen the remarkable DuPont product Sentryglas® for the material’s extraordinary qualities and its ability to be molded into complex curving geometries with incredibly tight radii. Its two layers of glass sandwich an interlayer that allows for dramatic bending while maintaining excellent optical properties.
Light that simultaneously reflects and is transmitted along the undulating glass creates a mystical effect that greets patrons as they approach the new façade. They continue under a smooth, reflective white threshold through a series of glass doors into a dramatically renovated and reconfigured interior. High above, a new café is accessible from two grand perimeter staircases that gently sweep toward a mezzanine with spectacular views out through the façade to Pushkin Square. At night, the lobby comes alive with glimmering luminescence as overhead points of light form a dazzling cloud that hovers just beneath the ceiling. The entrance hall of the Pushinsky Cinema has been transformed into one of the great social spaces of the world of performance and spectacle.
