The Cinematic Kinematic is an exploration of cinema, architecture, and the relationships between them. Inspired by the 1991 surrealist-black-comedy Delicatessen, the exploration manifests itself in a series of related works. What began as a simple look into chaos versus order transforms itself into an exploration of the enslaving self-destructive nature of human society and consequences of it.The first phase of the exploration begins as a physical manifestation of the dichotomy of order and chaos presented in the film. This object is then flattened and drawn out at full scale, the process of which extracts a verbal explanation of the film. The verb extracted from the process of flattening and re-imaging is skinning. This prompts the creation of a machine to delve deeper into the nature of the action. The machine slowly destroys itself as the sliding blade skins the bottom of the candle which contains the restraints that suspend the volume of water. When too much of the candle is peeled away, the water is released and the flame is extinguished. The final step in the process is to drag the machine into the realm of architecture. This is accomplished by transforming the machine into a 1” = 1’ scale model of a much larger one. Architecture demands interaction with people. The person in this case is the slave of the machine, eternally tasked with preventing the machine from destroying itself. This result reveals the self-destructive nature of society and the bondage that it places on the people within.
