emersion DESIGN was selected to provide design services for the renovation of the 3rd floor In-Patient unit at Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati. The complete renovation included new flooring, paint, lighting, patient room millwork, plumbing fixtures and wall tile in patient restrooms, nurse’s station millwork, wayfinding signage and graphics. This update brought the space from an outdated mid-90’s palette to modern day appeal to be welcoming to children and families and functional for nursing staff.
The design concept was derived from the symbol on the fezzes worn by Shrine, the star of the emblem representing the thousands of children helped by their philanthropy each year. The star became the basis for wayfinding signage and highlighting patient rooms. A color palette of gender-neutral shades of blues and teals were used as accent to neutral walls and millwork finishes. Wood look sheet vinyl flooring gives warmth to the space.
The nurse’s station and elevator lobby are contrasting to the patient corridors with a neutral patterned floor and purple wall and soffit accents. The nurse’s station millwork was revamped to function for modern day technology and current usage. The shapes of the desks are more contemporary and conducive to patient interaction. Dark woodgrain laminate contrasts with a white patterned laminate to make the desks focal points of the space. Tops are solid surface for durability and longevity.
The star graphic indicates each patient room from the corridor and incorporates a dry erase board, room number and doctor’s coat hook within it. Patient rooms have neutral finishes and dark solid surface countertops and sinks to help disguise soiling from silver nitrate chemical used to treat patient’s burns. Patient restrooms have mosaic tiles of the blues, teals and white colors and all new plumbing fixtures.
The waiting area incorporates the star symbol as solid color accents within the wood look vinyl flooring. New furniture and updated finishes will make space more welcoming for families to spend time in.
