For Montreal-based stone supplier Ciot, BxSM designed a new showroom and slab gallery in a former armaments factory on the Brooklyn waterfront.
On entering, industrial Sunset Park is seemingly left behind, replaced with a dramatic, formal gallery-like space featuring figured marbles, artwork by Moss and Lam and a peek into the slab gallery, located in the building’s skylit atrium.
A few large walls loosely subdivide the showroom, concealing the industrial building envelope in favor of clean lines, quiet tones, and soft natural light. Custom tables by BxSM and Ciot are provided for customers and designers to spread out drawings and finish palettes comfortably, with a bit of a design studio feel.
In the slab gallery, dark walls provide a dramatic backdrop for both the slabs and the trusses, cranes, and skylight structure. The skylight glazing, previously clear, was replaced with frosted acrylic panes which diffuse light evenly throughout the gallery. Visitors enter on the main axis for maximum impact, and a wide main aisle populated with tables, seating, and plants provides space for working or relaxing.
