Designed using principles of salutogenesis, the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre is one of the first facilities in North America to emphasize emotional and physical health in its provision of breast cancer screening and diagnostic services.
Located at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre in Hamilton, the project involved repurposing existing hospital space and creating an addition. The design focused on creating a uniquely non-institutional experience for patients and their families, from arrival at the sheltered garden-like entrance through to assessment and treatment, where materials, light and views have a powerful sway over the emotional response to being there.
By integrating form, layout, natural materials and an abundance of natural light, the design creates an oasis-like atmosphere that demonstrates the significant positive effect architecture can have in a healthcare environment.
