The Chuska Apartments
is a 30 unit affordable housing project in Gallup, NM. This project provides transitional housing
for homeless families and also homes for families earning 60% less than the
area?s median income.
This project was
designed to emulate a traditional village.
Located on a challenging sloped site, its buildings form two elongated
communal courtyards. The stepped
building forms are created by staggering and mirroring just 2 standard unit plans. The result is a rich architectural experience
that balances privacy with communal spaces.
The design borrows
from the local vernacular of stucco walls and pitched roofs. The units are
designed to be energy efficient with an emphasis on day-lighting and passive
and active solar heating. The typical floor
plan is an open layout for the living/dining/kitchen spaces with a good
connection into the south facing patios and yards while the bedroom/bath areas
are efficiently laid out in a more private zone.
The center of the
community is the Community Building.
This building houses a shared kitchen area for larger group meals and an
adjacent barbecue pit outside for residents to use when the weather is
nice. The community facility also has
other shared amenities such as a laundry room and a large gathering space. All of these components allow for
socializing, while creating opportunities for sharing resources.
