The new Christopher Columbus School is a 21st Century educational facility which replaces its namesake building constructed on the same site in the City of Trenton in 1894. The building functions both as a Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade school and as an anchor to the community in which it is situated providing easy access via public transportation, bicycle and walking to its gymnasium, multi-purpose room, media and distance learning centers. The construction materials and building systems employ the latest in energy-efficient and energy saving technology, as well as rebate opportunities to the owner through the New Jersey Smart Start Program. The demolition of the existing building was undertaken to make the best use of recycled content and environmentally responsible disposal of discarded material. This building achieved the required LEED points in accordance with the New Jersey School Development Authority. LEED points include Sustainable Sites (7/14), Water Efficiency (1/5), Energy & Atmosphere (1/17), Materials & Resources (3/13), Indoor Environmental Quality (10/15), and Innovation & Design (1/5).
