The original WSU bookstore known as the “Bookie” is being transformed into a new Student Center. This student funded, campus recreation and social space will provide unique and new program elements on campus. Providing indoor and outdoor spaces, and program areas are welcoming regardless of a person’s physical limitations, culture, gender or sexual orientation. It is managed jointly by University Rec and the CUB.
The curved wall design programmatically organizes the building, both interior and exterior, into a perceived hierarchy of public, semi-public and private spaces without creating a labyrinth of specialty. The existing masonry shell has been thoughtfully organized into spaces for student to focus on health, recreation, academics and spiritual well-being.
The spaces are organized into public spaces on the upper levels and more private as you move down into the building. Public spaces include food service, recreation and social space and a large event space. Moving down the central stairs, access to the semi-public spaces such as study areas for collaboration, multi-purpose rooms for hot yoga, wrestling, and Zumba, multiple cardio & weight rooms, meditation rooms with foot-wash, a nap room and a gender neutral restroom.
The more private spaces include gender neutral and gender specific locker rooms, support space and saunas. The lowest level provides space for additional recreation rooms such as cross-fit, weights and class space and open up to an outdoor workout space. The interior and exterior spaces are well integrated to allow for multiple experiences on the various levels.
The proposed outdoor pedestrian corridor connect with the proposed upper-level plaza outside the café. Bouldering walls and slackline ties at the upper plaza meet the new north stair, which provides a safe, well-lit circulation and active elements for cross-fit. Special attention is given to providing a new welcoming entry, increasing natural light, attention to private and public zones, creating an iconic building, integrating sustainability and technology.
