The Chimney Rock Residence by Studio Carney Architecture is a concept design nestled in the forested hills of Lake Lure, North Carolina. The project was envisioned for a couple who had fallen in love with the area and its three rustic cabins, which they now rent out as vacation retreats. Set on a high ridge above these cabins, the new home was designed to fully embrace the site’s dramatic views-Lake Lure to the north and the iconic Chimney Rock formation to the east.
Inspired by the client’s desire for a minimal, modern cabin that balances comfort with the raw beauty of nature, the project took shape as a contemporary A-frame. The design overcame typical A-frame limitations-like tight interior volumes-by extending the form to frame outward views and carving space internally for efficient living. The staircase was carefully positioned to align with the view of Chimney Rock, offering a moment of visual drama as one ascends through the space.
The materials palette-dark wood siding, metal roofing, and natural finishes-was chosen to both reference regional Appalachian homes and ensure the home blended effortlessly with its wooded surroundings. Triple-glazed windows and high insulation levels were incorporated to enhance energy efficiency and passive cooling.
Although the project was eventually paused due to rising construction costs, Chimney Rock Residence remains a strong example of how thoughtful design can elevate compact living and celebrate connection to nature. The concept continues to inspire future builds and serves as a reflection of Studio Carney Architecture’s mission: to craft quiet, timeless architecture rooted in context and purpose.
