Since its development, Louisville's Waterfront Park has become a cultural focus for the city and the surrounding community. Waterfront Park is also home to The Belle of Louisville, a storied Riverboat, which celebrated its 100th anniversary as an icon of river culture in 2014. To commemorate this, the city hosted a Riverboat Festival in which steamboats like "The Belle" were invited from around the nation's waterways. For this purpose, a design competition was held for the creation of a series of pavilions to be used during the festival which would be dispersed across Waterfront Park. Entrants were asked to consider the Pavilions possible functions during the festival as well as its construction within a budget of $8,000 each. Our focus was on the dichotomy between maximizing variability, transformative possibilities, and the need for simplicity to fit within the modest budget. In order to find that balace, we sought a dialogue between two major elements: a modular structural system and a material system which could maximize formal variability.
