In 2017, Penn State Health embarked upon an aggressive, fast-tracked plan for the 3-story Vertical Expansion of the 5-story Children’s Hospital building, designed by the same architect. This project represents the final piece of the implementation of the hospital’s Clinical Quadrangle, which established the location of two major buildings along the “Arc,” an iconic, sweeping form that sets the alignment of the precinct’s buildings, landscape and infrastructure. The buildings are unified along the curve of the Arc, a bold landscape form that links the new hospital complex inextricably with the landscape. With the completion of the Vertical Expansion on top of the Children’s Hospital, the ambitious plan reached full implementation.
