A conversion of an industrial factory into a designer showroom for a children’s clothing brand based in Hong Kong. The loft conversion in the industrial port of Kwai Chung created an enclosed shop within the centre of an open-plan design and living space. The shop is used to show the latest children’s clothing collection while providing a visual locus to the space and separating the living and dining room from the storage and design areas.
The concept was to create a single open plan volume to maximise the height and open feeling of the industrial shell while creating distinct zones as one moves around the office. A wooden screen separates the shop area allowing a degree of privacy for buyers while affording glimpses into the space as one walks around the island in the centre.
A 10 meter long table with custom concrete legs and panels cast by AFFECT-T forms the design area, packing table, and washing and kitchen counter top as it moves across the loft. Hidden corian displays meld into the walls like vitrines displaying individual clothing items.
In the rear, mirrored cabinets are hidden below an integrated planter box with drying racks in the window to both water the plants and provide warmth to the industrial space. A full kitchen was installed for events and staff diners along with guest bedroom for visiting clients, and extensive storage space, bathrooms with bathing facilities. The lounge area with television and sofa is used for meetings, combining the feeling of home with curving lines, unique displays, and surprising spaces. The Children’s Fashion Atelier is an office for children and adults.
