Chicken Coop To A Human CoupeThe design brief for Ashwin Architects was to convert an old disused chicken shed into a bachelor residence. The industrial nature of the building complete with truss-work & sheet roofing was to be retained with minimal construction or disruption. The free-standing black wall is the only major construction which divides the living & the bedroom areas offering a total sense of privacy. Most of the elements were salvaged such as the wood from machinery packing crates, the steel from a scrapyard & the bathroom tiles were “rejects” as they were not of uniform colour. The house being a whole of 800 sft is totally lit with 33 LEDs consuming electricity equivalent to 2 of 40w incandescent bulbs. Light reflectors made from sheet metal & finished with metallic reflective paint were designed to add to the ambience of the house. The lights were grouped in such a way that different parts of the house could be lit depending on which part of the house was occupied.
