Project Scope & Objectives:
• Open up kitchen space. Open up and organize the kitchen space to respond to the coach house “back of lot” location and kitchen-centric family needs.
• Context. This Chicago coach house is situated in the back of a typical narrow city lot and abuts an alleyway to it’s east. Through the use of carefully integrated openings filled with obscure glass block, the Kitchen draws light from the alley’s eastern exposures without letting in on what some may consider an undesirable neighboring feature. The rest of the kitchen opens toward the rest of the living volume as a high-use zone of family life. A square wood clad column encapsulates an existing chimney and vertical chases, while providing additional cabinet storage, open shelving and a central place for the family’s most popular appliance in the house: the
espresso machine. Ceiling height is maximized by a series of raised volumes that geometrically respond to structural elements and maximize lighting options.
• Use Sensible Materials. Custom cabinets were constructed using FSC certified Beech veneer fronts stained to achieve an ebonized walnut finish. Counter tops are a visually active variegated granite used as a contrasting counterpoint to the dark monolithic cabinet fronts. Cabinet interiors are black melamine. Large scale porcelain tiles were used on the floor for easy maintenance and durability. Energy efficient stainless steel appliances were used throughout.
