The Mike and Leslie Lowrey Emergency Services Pavilion is the newest addition to CHI St. Luke’s Health Brazosport Hospital. Having run out of space in the existing ER and servicing an expanding population base, it was time for a new facility.
At the early concept stage, it was decided not to attach the building to the existing facility as an appendage, but to separate the buildings and create a courtyard with a Healing Garden between the two that can be accessed and enjoyed by both. Links to the Hospital occur at either end of the courtyard.
Access to the new facility is separate from the main hospital with independent covered patient drop-off and entry. The front facing waiting and check-in area is encased in glass to provide transparency to the incoming patients and nurses. This area is set back from the east facing façade and protected by an expressed horizontal shading device to reduce the amount of glare and heat. The materials for the addition were selected to complement the existing hospital but introduce a unique palette. Stone, wood, porcelain tile, metal panel, and glass, create a cohesive contemporary, yet inviting exterior.
