When Cherry Hill Mall opened in October, 1961, it was the largest mall in the U.S. and the first enclosed, climate-controlled shopping center in the Eastern U.S. Now owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT), it has 160 tenants and occupies 1.3 million square feet of leasable space. A two-year, $218 million upgrading of public spaces and operations areas, plus expansion to accommodate new retailers was substantially completed by November, 2008. The joint architecture and lighting program gives the Mall a sleek and contemporary exterior and interior image to attract a broad shopper spectrum.
