LandmarkThe Twister Landmark Tower is intended to anchor a new masterplan in Cheongna by being a balanced highly visible symbol to the city while providing cultural amenities such as theaters, observation decks and planetariums to the people. As a landmark, it has a consistent profile from all directions, unifying the vicinity.Structure
The structural system is “revolutionary.” Suspended by steel
cabling off a ring beam mounted 466 m high, the entire glazing system twists
open or closed continuously responding to the weather shifts and time of day.
The ring is supported at an angle by eight helical columns;
each counters the other’s push and pull in perfect balance. Seismic events are
absorbed and dissipated by their spring-like nature. Each helix is a continuous
welded hot-rolled steel rail 1.2 km long when stretched out. With temperature
changes of +/-30 degrees the rails extend and contract 3.2 m over their length,
resulting in the twisting motion of 1.6 m on the perimeter glazing. This locks/
unlocks the airspace between, providing gossamer light effects throughout the
day and ecological benefits throughout the seasons befitting a landmark.Clean ConceptsIn summer the active double skin twists open due to thermal
expansion of the coil beams allowing the stack effect to work. Air is heated
under the glazed atrium scooping up moisture from the canal and water park. The
warm moist air then rises between the active double glazing where plantings
filter out harmful particulates and cool the air via evapo-transpiration,
resulting in cool clean air that improves the microclimate.
In the winter the coil beams contract sealing the double
glazing into thermally insulating airspaces, where the plants in the greenhouse
environment providing shade and pleasure to the eye. The high contrast pattern
of the envelope is highly visible to birds allowing them to thrive.
