Chengdu Tianfu Art Gallery stands out as one of China's recently completed art galleries. Covering an area of 40,000m2, it boasts 13 specialized art exhibition halls dedicated to displaying modern art and works by local artists. Beyond the exhibition spaces, the museum is well-equipped with additional facilities, including art storage rooms, public education rooms, an art shop, and a café. Situated on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, the architectural concept features a rectangular exhibition hall box supporting a massive curved overhanging roof, extending up to 30 meters to shield against sunlight and rain, adapting to the local climate. The exterior is characterized by a floating white roof, delivering a sculptural appearance. The interior public spaces are covered with bamboo shavings, creating a cave-like flowing space and successfully shaping an iconic image for media dissemination.
The building is centered on a public hall that connects the surrounding exhibition halls, with the public space unfurling like petals. The sculpture exhibition hall by the lake introduces the expansive lake view through its full-height glass, where changing light interacts with the lakeside scenery, harmoniously integrating art with nature. The design, by artistically shaping the space and presenting art within it, explores a new relationship between space, artworks and audience.
In 2021, as gallery's inaugural exhibition, Chengdu Art Biennale attracted a total of one million visitors. The project has been fully recognized by the art community and the public, turning it into a focus of social concern and injecting energy into urban development.
