Château-Chinon, in the heart of the Morvan region, is home to the Cité of the Gifts received by François Mitterrand during his two seven-year presidential terms. This heritage complex creates a unique link between national history and local culture. Responsible for the renovation and extension of the existing museums, the agency is developing an innovative museography and a landscape project that invite visitors to wander and rediscover a region steeped in craftsmanship and culture.
The Museum Complex opens onto the town of Château-Chinon. From the Maison du Morvan and its new forecourt, visitors access this site at the crossroads of contemporary history and the heritage of a region. The extensive renovation connects the three existing entities (Maison du Morvan, Museum of the Presidential Terms, and Costume Museum) and integrates them into a broader landscaped pathway.
The museographic challenge is to project the presentation of the collections into the 21st century through a sober and simple design that allows the artworks to fully express themselves, complemented by the integration of digital galleries.
To reach the museums, visitors walk through the “lower garden,” an evocation of the Morvan and its landscape qualities, leading to the reception pavilion. This contemporary creation serves as a link between the two museums and the gardens. From the “upper garden,” the pavilion, with its fully glazed façades, extends onto a terrace overlooking the landscape and the rooftops of Château-Chinon.
The promenade, a tribute to the illustrious walker, invites a sensitive rediscovery of the nature and heritage of the Morvan, highlighting the region’s wood industry. The vegetation, arranged along contour lines, offers varied atmospheres, from wooded undergrowth to open coppices.
A covered gallery structures and blends with the garden, while offering visitors the opportunity to discover, along their walk, a land art installation or a new and unexpected view of Château-Chinon and the Morvan.
