Château-Chinon, at the heart of the Morvan region, hosts the Cité des Présents, the collection of guests received by François Mitterrand during his two seven-year terms. This heritage complex creates a unique connection between national history and local culture. Tasked with the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing museums, the agency has developed an innovative museography and a landscape project that invite visitors to stroll and rediscover a region steeped in craftsmanship and culture.
The museum city opens onto the town of Château-Chinon. From the Maison du Morvan and its new forecourt, visitors access this site at the crossroads of contemporary history and regional heritage. The extensive rehabilitation links the three existing entities (Maison du Morvan, Museums of the Seven-Year Presidency, and Costume Museum) and integrates them into a broader landscaped route.
The museological objective is to project the presentation of the collections into the 21st century with a restrained and simple museography that allows the artworks and digital galleries to fully express themselves.
To reach the museums, visitors walk through the “lower garden,” a reflection of the Morvan and its scenic qualities, leading to the reception pavilion. This contemporary creation serves as a bridge between the two museums and the gardens. From the “upper garden,” the pavilion, with fully glazed façades, opens onto a terrace overlooking the landscape and the rooftops of Château-Chinon.
The walk, a tribute to the illustrious walker, invites a sensitive rediscovery of Morvan’s nature and heritage, highlighting the local wood industry. The vegetation, arranged along the contour lines, offers varied atmospheres, from shaded undergrowth to open coppices.
A covered gallery structures the garden and forms an integral part of it while giving visitors the chance to encounter, along their walk, a land art installation or an unexpected viewpoint over Château-Chinon and the Morvan.
