PDA was the Design Architect for this new home for an existing charter school in Gary, an expansion from elementary to a full K-12 program. Built on a sandy duneland site adjacent to a deeded wetland, the LEED Gold-designed school has a full-time environmental sciences teacher and embraces an exterior teaching courtyard, safe from violence and the truck route it fronts in this post-industrial community. We assembled three main volumes in a pre-engineered building system, 62,000 SF total, to meet the demands of cost, low soils capacity, and time - less than $150/sf, no masonry on the entire job, and one year from start to open.
