The building is located on a small site in an area of Tokyo that had many temples, shrines, and samurai estates in the Edo period but now has many Embassies. We aimed to create a residence that could melt into this graceful, historical yet international neighborhood. Despite the physical and zoning restrictions of the site strictly controlling the building mass, we created a healthy life for residents by adopting the Art Framing concept throughout the building. Using structural Frames and windows as art frames so as to bring the outside environment and help residents' active communication.
Due to the grid framing with fl at columns and beams, we could realize fl oor to ceiling 2.4m windows which bring in sunlight and views of the lush greenery of the gardens of the neighboring embassy. By making a design code to create something reminiscent of the samurai estates of yore, we allowed the columns and beams to be visible, creating a facade suitable for this magnifi cent townscape. We actively used the basement making the most of this compact site. We were able to create comfortable spaces fi lled with sunlight even underground by connecting dry areas with green walls and atrium spaces. We use new technology such as sleep sensors and entrance/ exit management systems with facial recognition giving benefi ts and value to the lives of residents and caregivers.
We also used many strategies to realize a low-energy low carbon building. These include low energy lighting, effi cient radiant fl oor heating in the dining rooms, and using solar energy to power lighting in the common area. Also to ensure nursing can continue in the case of an emergency, such as a disaster, we have crafted a business continuity plan with an emergency generator and disaster relief equipment and supplies. Additionally, because of the adoption of fl at beams, electrical conduits and mechanical ducts traveling along corridors are easy to maintain.
