Designed to replace an existing outdated 1950’s school, this new 80,000 SF, 600 student elementary
school was designed to be a LEED Silver equivalent facility. The existing school, which was un-reinforced
masonry construction, was not designed to meet current seismic criteria and was not elevated above the current flood elevation. Classroom sizes did not meet current standards and the facility did not provide all the amenities required by today’s standards.

The new school meets all SC Department of Education standards and was designed to meet all structural requirements of modern day educational facilities. Due to the complexity of the existing site and confined area the building’s shape did not facilitate a uniform/modular orientation. The design team stacked spaces within the 2 story classroom wing to create an efficient, easily constructed CMU building. Key locations such as the main entry and bus loop entry were “highlighted” higher end materials for architectural emphasis while limiting the use of expensive materials throughout the entire building.

Spaces include: a combination cafeteria/ multi-purpose room, music room, science facility, classrooms with the latest computer technology and other required elements. By wrapping the school around a central courtyard the design creates an outdoor teaching space between the cafeteria and classroom wings.
