Chapel Near Mission Espada

Firm
Type
We were given five weeks to see the project through from design conception to execution/documentation.My project is sited across the street from Mission Espada and references geometries created by wind.  The chapel is located underground in near darkness, and is accessed by a long ramp that is punctured by dozens of 2'x2' translucent columns.  Some columns touch the ground and contain layers of visible urns. Columns become stalactite light-wells in the underground chapel, and there is also a skylight on the terminating wall of the chapel. On ground level, two grand geometries interplay, both suspended and pinned to the earth by extensions of the underground columnar elements. The piece sits on the landscape as an alien element evoking curiosity. A series of surprises leads the occupant to its entrance and through the threshold into the underground. The building is also sited to appropriately take advantage of the prevailing summer winds in San Antonio, Texas.
