The three-year epidemic has changed many people's understanding of life, and resort hotels have become a short escape from the tedious life. The Shunshan Courtyard Marriott is located on a vast plain at the border of Changzhou and Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province: surrounded by Mount Shun, idyllic water towns and houses; it is operated in conjunction with the B&B to the south and the Jizi Academy to the east, and is well established.
After a comprehensive assessment of the site conditions, we believe that we need to focus on the relationship between large-scale buildings and nature, people and culture under high-intensity development. How to harmonize the "large-scale building" with the open natural wilderness? How to create a sense of "holiday feeling" in limited space? How to integrate the humanistic spirit of Jiangnan into the site and provide a unique identity for the site?
The answer given by gad is "to create a beautiful mountain residence unique to Jiangnan". From the dimensions of architectural form, garden pathway, and local spirit, we aim to create a relaxing and cozy "pure land in the mountains and forests" that is free from complicated decorations and traditional forms.
01 "U"-Shaped Enclosure, Layer-by-Layer Retreat--Optimization of Landscape and Sunshine
In order to realize the harmonious symbiosis between architecture and nature, we adopt the architectural layout of "U-shape enclosure and layer by layer retreat" - the U-shaped volume opens up to the south side, which is high in the north and low in the south. From the perspective of the relationship with nature, this form will visually dissolve the large-scale volume, and dialog with Shunshan in a humble and modest manner; in terms of the city, the complete urban façade of the hotel shields the noises from the east, west and north, and inwardly creates its own "Shangri-la" in the city; in terms of the hotel feeling, the layers of the retreating terrace gradually inwardly converge in scale from the bottom to the top, while increasing privacy layer by layer, naturally forming a "public-private" demarcation: the first and second floors are used as a public activity area, while the upper floors are used as guest room spaces; at the same time, the retreat on each floor form an accessible public activity platform that is in contact with nature, which not only introduces sunlight into the interior, but also increases the interaction between man and nature.
02 House and Garden as a Whole, Three-Dimensional Garden - the Compounding of the Garden Experience
We treat the hotel space as a "garden", and each space as a part of the garden space, in order to form a continuous, sustained and rich human experience. We consider architecture, landscape, and interior to form a three-dimensional garden space layout, and synchronize the horizontal and vertical dimensions to create a garden experience of walking, viewing, living, and touring.
The design also enhances this experience in many subtle and dramatic ways, such as the design of the main courtyard, where the building and the people, the bridge and the lake form a huge scale contrast. It blurs people's judgment of the scale to form a broader perception in the limited space and forms the "going on a lake tour" experience.
The extension of the eaves enhances the building's stretch in the horizontal direction, which further dissolves the perception of the scale of the space by the people in it and "hides" the volume of the building, making people feel like they are in the houses and gardens accessible in terms of scale.
03 Ink Colors, Natural Materials - Modernization of Classical Implications
The colors and materials used in the design are inspired by the traditional Jiangnan houses and re-expressed in modern architectural language. The building adopts black, white and gray tones to create a sense of elegant ink; the building skin uses simple and coarse materials to create a sense of relaxation and leisure; and the use of gardening elements such as bridges, running water, green plants and rockeries evoke the experience of Jiangnan in a contextualized way... From the whole to the details, we aim to outline the classical temperament of Jiangnan.
