The project embodies a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity, a thoughtful reflection on art and environment, and a seamless integration of architecture and community life, creating a distinctive cultural landmark in Changyuan Village. The design preserves the original building’s exterior walls while introducing a reimagined roof inspired by traditional Chinese wooden eaves—constructed in steel and simplified to echo the interlocking logic of classic mortise-and-tenon joinery. The roof pitch is adjusted, giving rise to double-layered shallow eaves. The facade is clad in wood-grain metal panels and white finishes, creating a sculptural envelope. On the south elevation, a large glass “box” appears embedded within the volume, creating a visual connection to the outdoors and harmonizing the architecture with its natural surroundings. Given the site constraints, the entrances are placed on the gable walls at either side, avoiding conflicts between interior functions and circulation while preserving the integrity of the north and south facades. Inside, the functional layout is thoughtfully reorganized to include a sunken multifunctional area, a large stepped reading zone, and a mezzanine lounge—breaking the monotony of the original structure and greatly enhancing spatial efficiency. Flexibility is a key principle of the spatial design. The sunken multifunctional area employs movable modular furniture, enabling flexible configurations for exhibitions, lectures, and village events. The second floor features a temporary exhibition space showcasing local culture and seasonal themes, while the mezzanine lounge provides an optimal vantage point toward the campsite to the south, creating a quiet retreat within the building.
