The concept for the scheme is that of change, just as the whole of Stratford will undergo huge transitions in the coming years, the new kiosks on Meridian Square will have to adapt to changes in use and audience. The brief calls for two separate conditions, one for exhibition during the Olympics and another for the legacy of kiosks serving the square 2012. We have decided to celebrate this transition by proposing a modular structure that literally changes when the Olympics end and so defines the evolution between these two distinct periods. One exhibition pavilion becomes a series of kiosks.
The project is organised with eight triangular interlocking modules that slot against each other to form a parallelogram. There are two variants of the module: One that faces the buses with a closed wall and another that opens up to the train station entrance. One anchoring and the other inviting. The structure clearly defines the edge of Meridian Square with its mass but also provides a colonnade running along the length facing the train station.
During the Olympics this area is part of the circulation route through the exhibition space. The angular walls and their sliding sections can host a multitude of exhibition layouts. By sliding half of the modules towards the square the building opens up, giving a whole new sense of perspective to the scheme. At the same time it offers the vendors protection from the elements and a covered space to display goods. Due to the shift in plan southern light is allowed to penetrate deep into the plan and creates small sunny patios in the heart of Stratford.
