Located on the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus in Vancouver, the internationally renowned Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (Chan Centre) houses a concert hall, an experimental theatre, and cinema, and is used by both the University and the greater Vancouver community.
Chan Centre is a 76,000 sq.ft. sculptural massing of three interconnected drum-shaped forms; the spectacular 1,400-seat Chan Shun Concert Hall, the 250-seat TELUS Studio Theatre - a reconfigurable high-tech black-box studio, and the 150-seat Royal Bank Cinema for screenings, classes, workshops and lectures. The building’s curved, double-height glass lobby follows the shape of the Chan Shun performance hall and links all three facilities. With its 18-foot-high canted glass windows, this curvilinear space minimizes reflections and enhances the exterior views of the surrounding forest, making it feel like an extension of the lobby itself and heightening the sense of discovery for the visitor.
Largely camouflaged by its surrounding natural landscape, the multi-award-winning Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is rated among the world’s best concert halls.
