This time, we teamed up with the ZAD team to create an ideal settlement community cluster in this narrow space through form combination, multi-element material matching, and integrated design of public space installations and landscapes. We aim to give the entire Century Cape Park a unique vitality and energy in the area under the bridge.
A settlement is a gathering place for human social activities. They gather together through living, working, and other means, forming a close social connection and interactive network. As a commercial cluster centered around tribes, it is not only a space for sales or gathering, but also a modern interpretation that deeply reflects the essence and sense of belonging of human communities. Under this concept, the community is envisioned as a vibrant and harmonious tribe, where each member plays an indispensable role in maintaining and enriching the cultural traditions and way of life of the tribe.
The project site is located under the Century Bridge of Century Cape Park in Haikou City, adjacent to the Century Cape Commercial District to the east and the Yundong Library to the west. How to create a community of hosts in such a venue has become the direction of this design exploration.
A major highlight of the project is the original site itself, with the south side of the Century Bridge providing a huge natural barrier for the site. Although the project type is a commercial district, the team prefers it to be a paradise under the cloud. For this purpose, we built scaffolding, landscaping, and spatial installations around the owner's store to increase more flexible grey space, and connected them through a winding central street. In addition to the main passages on both sides of the venue, we have also opened up the east and west of the venue to create an open and friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
Restraint and blank space are a major focus of this design. In order to maximize the display of each store's characteristics, the design did not make too much decoration in the details, but outlined the framework of each house through simple language, giving more creative space to the 14 managers. This time, we joined hands with the Bianyu Construction Design Team to create an ideal cluster of settlements and communities in this narrow space through form combination, multi-element material matching, and integrated design of public space installations and landscapes. We aim to bring a unique vitality and energy to the entire Century Cape Park in the area under the bridge.
By creating elevated spaces, terraces, covered bridges, and extending "cloud frames" in various directions, the design creates a more diverse and layered spatial experience. During the stroll, people's gaze constantly changes with the turning of the flow: sometimes interacting with the endless crowd under the bridge, sometimes enjoying the distant sea view, and sometimes connecting with the internal space of a certain store. The platforms extending outward from each store provide more space for rest and relaxation, while also connecting the spaces inside and outside the venue.
Another characteristic of the site is the landscape terrace, where we connect scattered small buildings through raised platforms to create an architectural archipelago effect with a sense of settlement, while also creating a natural resting place. During the construction process of this project, Haikou encountered a rare super typhoon Capricorn. In order to ensure the successful landing of the project, we reinforced each building installation, and the landscape platform provided more space for the above ground foundation of the building. Fortunately, all building installations remained intact after the typhoon, which gave us even greater confidence.
