The Montérégie Region of Quebec was left without an engaging gathering space since its main convention center closed in 2013. There has since been a strong desire to provide its citizens with a new gathering space, one that would increase business tourism while also highlighting the unique character of this rural area.
This ambitious project – a hotel and the largest convention center in rural Quebec - combines 36 conference rooms, 63 000 ft² of exhibition space, a main hall seating 2 500 people, and 200 hotel rooms. Initially, the hotel and convention spaces were conceived as two separate projects. To enhance the visitors’ experience and create a stronger architectural presence, we unified the two buildings by extending a vast copper-coloured canopy along its length, merging their disparate programs. Large windows bathe this promenade in natural light, and both the hotel and convention centers are accessible from this shared space, easing circulation during high-traffic events.
Reducing the project’s environmental impact was of the highest priority. The building features a massive accessible green roof that filters air pollutants, sequesters carbon emissions, and limits storm water run-off. The Convention Center is also powered by biogas - a renewable energy source drawn from local waste. This project is now a source of pride for a region well established as leaders within the biotechnology industry.
It was also crucial that the building act as conduit for local identity. By cladding the canopy in copper-coloured aluminum panels, the building references the prestigious Casavant Frères pipe organ factory, which has been contributing to the regional economy for many generations. The new Hotel and Convention Center acts not only as a local landmark, but also as a commercial and touristic destination that stimulates the region’s economy.
