In responding to the developer’s brief for compact living, Smart Design Studio has introduced a new design concept of ‘high-speed luxury’ to multi-unit developments. Inspired by the sophisticated curves and glossy finishes exclusive to high-end sports cars and motor yachts, the interiors reference the finely tuned qualities of bespoke bodywork in the details, fixtures, fittings and planning.
This concept, to be repeated throughout the WestTower at Central Park, spearheads a new design scheme for multi-unit developments in that it brings luxury to an area normally reserved for boutique developments, and delivers it on a compact scale. Smart Design Studio’s project challenges traditional concepts of apartment living and reinvigorates how we think about interior design in the context of maintaining the commercial realities of a multi-unit development.
The interiors are planned around a central multifunction pod, standing freely within the apartment shell. Shaped to reference the body of a car or boat; the reflective, glossy, panelled pods contain the apartment’s functional components: kitchen, laundry, bathroom, storage, air-conditioning and services.
With two variations in the design approach – one nautical and one automotive – the use of full-gloss polyurethane panelling, luxurious timber veneers, rounded joinery and chromed trims reinforced this design philosophy. Decadent bathrooms have timber and leather-like finishes while the pod’s recessed and rounded-edge door handles evoke a sense of finely detailed bodywork.
The apartment design embraces compact living by giving detailed consideration to the arrangement of the componentry of everyday life, thus elevating studio apartment living to the highest possible standard.
