The
temporary display pavilion was built for the sales and marketing of the future
Central Park development at the old Carlton United Brewery site on Broadway,
opposite UTS. The pavilion is fully transportable and will be relocated as
other buildings on the site are constructed.
Conceived as a floating pavilion in the Mies tradition, the building was
assembled on site from 13 column-free modules of 3m x 15m each with their size
determined by the maximum unit transportable by truck. This approach, with the modules
constructed in a factory in Gosford, was adopted to expedite construction time
and reduce costs.
Refined to a pure, uncompromised form, the hovering floor and ceiling planes
define the shape with the ceiling supported by slender, expressed columns on
the street side only. The elegant result reflects the simplicity of the design
intent. A full white palette was chosen to enhance the elegance of the built
form, providing a neutral, gallery-style backdrop for the marketing of all
future buildings on the site.
Glossy white floor tiles, white granite, white joinery, ceiling and walls are
offset by the multicoloured “ONE CENTRAL PARK” logo developed by Frost Design.
Enormous 3-D letters of internally illuminated acrylic sit forward of the
glazing on the street podium, boldly addressing the frenetic street environment
of Broadway. The striking, coloured forms contrast beautifully with the raw
urban texture of the streetscape and the newly landscaped setting that has been
established for the display pavilion.
Inside, a heliostat, designed by lighting artist Yann Kersale, and a living
green wall designed by Patrick Le Blanc, demonstrate the facade treatment
proposed for the first residential tower developed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel.
