In the center of Colombes, the current market hall, built in the 1970s, suffers from an outdated image and functionality that no longer meet contemporary expectations. Restoring vitality and user comfort to this site is the core ambition of the project. While doubling the occupied floor area, the agency introduces improved natural light and architectural quality, as well as flexibility in layout to accommodate future uses. A necessary architectural sobriety is embraced throughout.
Located on a through-block site, the existing market benefits from multiple access points. By enhancing the entrance on rue Bournard, the Colombes Market regains a clear identity and address. Once again, it becomes a lively meeting place where people can shop, dine, and enjoy a drink. This rehabilitation contributes to redefining the town center of Colombes.
Beyond market opening hours, the site can be transformed into a large covered event space thanks to the installation of movable furniture on the mezzanine and easily dismantled fittings in the food court area. It can then host local events, community meals, or municipal receptions. The agency proposes generous spatial reconfigurations, doubling the existing surface area by enlarging the original patio and creating a mezzanine beneath an elevated glass roof. Great care is devoted to the choice of materials to facilitate maintenance and improve acoustic comfort. Natural light enters through the large skylight with its exposed timber structure. This sunshade diffuses and warms the light, ensuring its even distribution throughout the market hall. Natural ventilation, made possible by operable façade openings, prevents overheating and guarantees summer comfort. Rainwater from the roof is collected in visible tanks and reused for irrigation and sanitary facilities. All interventions are part of an eco-responsible approach, from low-carbon construction principles to implementation methods (including responsible site management) and the future operational practices of the venue.
