The Crous de Lille has established a centralized production unit to best respond to the evolving needs of university catering across all sites in the metropolitan area. This new building brings together, in a compact and welcoming structure, an assembly kitchen, an administrative restaurant, and a third space for students. The facility has a strong identity, marked by a contemporary use of bricks, characteristic of Lille’s architecture.
The Crous de Lille is located in the university residences district, within the Cité Scientifique campus. With a desire for architectural coherence, the agency chose brick as the primary material. Deployed in a combination of colors and patterns, this contemporary reinterpretation gives the façade a vibrant and distinctive architectural appeal. This approach extends to the exterior paving, where bricks echo the façade while highlighting relaxation areas and gentle circulation paths.
Through the openings that punctuate the façade, the interior life and activity are subtly revealed. Embracing the building’s compactness to minimize envelope surfaces and footprint, the agency designed a Crous that is open both to the public and the surrounding environment. It provides all users with optimal working and welcoming conditions. The central unit is bathed in light by a large patio, while the third space and administrative restaurant benefit from generous openings onto the campus and a separate entrance.
Far from the sometimes austere image associated with such facilities, the agency employed familiar visual cues to bring comfort and well-being within the Crous. Human-scaled design, flexibility, and a variety of meeting and focus spaces (high seating, alcoves, tiered seating, benches, etc.) in the third space and restaurant contribute to a sense of joyful, inclusive, and optimistic architecture.
